Govt. Women's Polytechnic College, Kozhikode, situated in the Calicut Corporation limits was started in the year 1962-1963 with a view to create ample chances for the educated women to undergo technician training and hence to increase the pool of employed Women Technicians. In the beginning there were 2 year diploma courses in Civil Engineering, Commercial Practice and Costume Design & Dress Making. Later the programmes were realigned as Diploma In Commercial Practice (3 year) and Civil Engineering Course was discontinued. In the year 1983 A new diploma courses on Power Electronics (3 year) was started. Later the Power Electronics course was restructured as Diploma in Electronics.
